Honestly, the heads …
Honestly, the heads you put on will make the most difference. Birch has a little more attack, and is a bit brighter and focused. Maple is really open sounding, and is naturally very warm. It won’t make too much of a difference, if you find a kit you like, buy it.

i have been told …
i have been told birch has long sustain and sharp attack, i have also been told that maple has a much warmer tone than birch. but when i go to yamaha’s web page they say there birch drums are legendary for there low end sound. i want a yamaha kit i like my toms to have a warm tone, with lots of low end, short sustain, and fat attack. i like my snare to have a low end crack with pleanty of punch, and my bass drum to have a very deep thump with short sustain. what would be better, birch or maple

The various Birch …
The various Birch Absolute sets seem to be the best sounding of all that I have heard you guys test. Agree about the snare – great sound. Those 80s era seamless metal snares from Yamaha are the bomb.

maple has strong …
maple has strong low frequencies and evenly balanced mids and highs, whereas birch has evenly balanced lows and highs (but the highs cut through the most) but it has weaker mids. However, your choice of heads and tuning affect the sound as much as the wood material.

Two different types …
Two different types of woods with different sounds. Birch is lighter, therefore it will have a lighter tone. Maple, being heavier, will have a lower, more rounded tone. It’s all in personal preference in sound.
