Han Bennink on Cheese Kit Diptych – Part 1/3

drum kitsCheese Kit Diptych is an installation by artist Walter Willems consisting of two drum kits. In one, full rounds of real (mainly Dutch) cheese sit atop drum stands; in the other, plastic cheese replicas usually found in store display windows are employed. In this absurd setting Willems reinforces the international stereotype of the Dutch by using a classic Dutch export product as its main ingredient.

Cheese Kit Diptych was created specifically to be played by world-renowned Dutch improvisational jazz drummer Han Bennink. Bennink, ambassador of the Dutch free jazz scene, is known for his ability to drum on any surface, teeming with humor, virtuosity, and creativity through his animated style. Willems considered his installation incomplete until Bennink played both of the drum kits.

The drum performance by Han Bennink was recorded on June 17, 2005 at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art where the Cheese Kit Diptych installation was a featured artwork in the Demons Stole My Soul: rock ‘n roll drums in contemporary art exhibition. As part of the performance Bennink also played a conventional drum kit and a pair of wooden shoes.

Directed and produced by Walter Willems.
DVD available at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Canada.

Homemade Electronic Drum Kit:Coltronics Kit-e

electronic drumsThis is my homemade electronic drum set. I call it the Coltronics Kit-e (“Kitty”). I made this video to show how I put it all together in case you might be thinking about making your own electronic drum kit. I came up with my own design. It started with a piezoelectric transducer soldered to a couple of wires and connected to a quarter inch phone jack. By trial-and-error, it morphed into what youre seeing in this video.
Ive had it for a number of years but its held up well. Im pleased with its design. Its compact. It works well. It was relatively inexpensive to put together using materials that are fairly easy to obtain. So check out the video. I hope it gives you some ideas.

Taylor Hawkins: At Guitar Center – Drum Kits

drum kitsAlthough he’s the idol of millions for his drumming prowess, Taylor Hawkins’ first rock ‘n’ roll dreams didn’t focus on the drums; rather, they were centered on the guitar because, as he puts it, “Nobody looks at the drummer.”

Pyle-Pro PDKM7 7 Microphone Wired Drum Kit with Mounting Accessories review

drum kitsI was looking for a cheap way to get some drums miced up in a hurry for this Saturday’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. I took a chance on this kit, even though I have never purchased anything that says “Pyle” on the label. Upon receiving this kit, my first surprise was the quality of the case, and then upon opening, I was surpised to find that these were the EXACT same microphones as the ones I borrowed once from a friend to do some recordings, but branded differently. He paid about 350-400 for his kit (still cheap by today’s standards).

I pulled out 1 overhead condensor and the kick-drum mic and mounted them, fired up the PA and had our drummer play a bit and was shocked at the clarity of the overhead mic! We could probably get away with just using this one microphone to mic the entire kit, or two overheads; they pick up everything very clearly. I turned up the volume on the kick-drum mic and was even more surprised to hear the thump of a much more expensive mic coming out of this seemingly too-small mic. Now, I have a wonderful drum mix coming from only 2 microphones and my mixer has more channels free than I would have expected. For fun, I added one of the tom/snare mics and they sounded equally clear.

After purchasing this, I can tell you that there is absolutely NO way I would purchase one of the “high-end” drum-mic kits. If you are looking for a solution for recording or live sound, this is it. I promise you will LOVE the sound and you will be ecstatic about the price you paid to get that sound.
